Emotional Diagnostics

Emotions Diagnostics – Understanding Feelings, Understanding Behavior

What is Emotion Diagnostics?

Emotional diagnostics deals with the professional assessment of a person’s emotional processes, emotional regulation, and psychological distress. It helps understand how children, adolescents, or adults deal with emotions, how pronounced their emotional reactivity is, and whether emotional difficulties or psychological abnormalities are present – for example, anxiety, depression, or emotional instability.

Especially in children and adolescents, emotional problems often do not manifest themselves directly, but rather show up in behavior – for example, through withdrawal, irritability, outbursts of anger or psychosomatic complaints.

When is emotion diagnostics useful?

An emotion diagnosis can be helpful if:

– a child or adolescent reacts noticeably emotionally (e.g. excessive anger, withdrawal, anxiety)

– the mood often fluctuates or changes for seemingly no reason

– Difficulties in social interaction (e.g. at school or with friends)

– physical complaints (e.g. stomachache or headache) without medical cause

– if emotional disorders such as anxiety disorder, depression, emotional instability are suspected

– Parents or teachers are concerned about a child’s mental state

A well-founded emotional diagnostics can also provide important information in the context of therapy preparation or when considering suitable treatment (e.g. behavioral therapy, depth psychological therapy).

Goals of emotion diagnostics

– Assessment of emotional development and stress

– Identification of mental disorders in childhood, adolescence or adulthood

– Derivation of support or therapy recommendations

– Support with school or family issues

– Assistance with behavioral problems in the social environment

Diagnostic Procedure

In my practice, emotion diagnostics are carried out in several well-structured steps, individually adapted to the age and the issue.

  1. Initial consultation

In a non-binding and free preliminary consultation, we will discuss the initial situation, your observations, and any specific questions. This conversation also serves to build trust—especially with children and adolescents.

  1. Anamnesis and questionnaires

Parents (in the case of children) or the affected person themselves (in the case of adolescents and adults) complete structured questionnaires. These include family, school, or work-related stress, emotional experiences, behavior, and psychosocial factors.

  1. Test diagnostics

Depending on the age and focus of the question, different scientifically based testing procedures are used. These include:

– Mood (depression, anxiety)

– Emotion regulation and impulse control

– Self-esteem

– social skills and attachment behavior

– psychosomatic symptoms

The tests are conducted in a child-friendly or age-appropriate manner (e.g., playfully, using images, interviews, or standardized questionnaires).

  1. Final interview and report

After evaluating all data, a detailed final interview follows, in which the results are explained clearly. Upon request, I can prepare a written psychological assessment, which also includes recommendations for school, everyday life, and therapeutic steps.

What happens after the diagnosis?

The results of the emotion diagnostics provide a valuable basis for further action:

– Psychotherapeutic support (e.g. for depressive or anxious symptoms)

– School-based measures (e.g. support for social-emotional difficulties)

– Family counseling or parent coaching

– Recommendation of suitable forms of therapy

Important: Emotional problems are not a sign of personal failure, but rather an expression of inner overload. Early assessment can help alleviate emotional suffering and provide positive developmental impetus – for both children and adults.

If you are worried or would like clarity about your child’s emotional experience or your own emotional state, I would be happy to support you with empathy and professional competence.
