Emotional Diagnostics

Emotional diagnostics – understanding feelings, clarifying emotional experiences

What is Emotion Diagnostics?

Emotional assessment is a psychological procedure for the professional assessment of emotional reactions, regulatory abilities, and psychological stress. It helps to better understand one’s own emotional experience—especially when feelings are perceived as overwhelming, difficult to control, or incomprehensible.

Questions often arise such as:

  • Why do I react so emotionally?
  • Why do certain situations stress me out excessively?
  • Is this still normal or does it already require treatment?

Emotional diagnostics provide clarity here. It can reveal emotional reaction patterns and help identify psychological stress (e.g., anxiety, depression, emotional instability) before they become chronic.

When is emotion diagnostics useful?

A thorough diagnostic assessment can be helpful if:

  • You often feel overwhelmed, irritated or exhausted
  • Your mood fluctuates unpredictably or changes for seemingly no reason
  • Anxiety, brooding or withdrawal tendencies increase
  • physical symptoms occur without a clear medical cause (e.g. sleep disorders, headaches, gastrointestinal complaints)
  • You experience difficulties in social interaction or repeatedly get into conflicts
  • there is a suspicion of a mental disorder (e.g. depression, anxiety disorder, emotional instability)
  • You are considering starting psychotherapy and would like a well-founded assessment of the initial situation

Emotional diagnostics can also provide valuable guidance in the context of professional stress, after stressful life events or to clarify inner psychological questions (e.g. “Where am I emotionally at the moment?”).

Goals of emotion diagnostics

  • Recording emotional stress and inner tension
  • Assessment of psychological symptoms and their severity
  • Analysis of emotion regulation, stress processing and self-esteem
  • Identifying resources and risk areas
  • Development of concrete recommendations for therapy, coaching or self-care

Diagnostic Procedure

The emotional diagnostics in my practice are structured, individually adapted and based on current scientific standards.

  1. Preliminary Consultation
In a non-binding initial consultation, we will discuss your personal questions, current life situation, and previous experiences with mental health issues. This conversation also serves to get to know each other and build trust.
  2. Medical History and Questionnaires
You will receive structured medical history forms to record your emotional history, biographical influences, and psychosocial stressors. In addition, psychologically sound questionnaires will be used to assess various emotional areas (e.g., mood, anxiety, impulsivity, self-esteem, social relationships).
  3. Testdiagnostik
Je nach individueller Fragestellung werden spezifische Testverfahren durchgeführt. Diese erfassen unter anderem:

    • depressive or anxious symptoms
    • emotional stability and impulse regulation
    • Self-perception, self-esteem and coping strategies
    • Psychosomatic reactions and stress management
The testing takes place in a calm, transparent atmosphere and at your own pace.
  4. Evaluation and Discussion of the Results
After a detailed evaluation of the results, a final personal consultation follows. The findings will be explained clearly and, together with you, will be related to your current life situation. Upon request, I can prepare a written report, which also includes therapeutic or counseling recommendations.

What happens after the diagnosis?

Emotional assessment provides an important foundation for all subsequent steps—regardless of whether you are already undergoing therapeutic treatment or are considering it. Possible next steps may include:

  • Initiation or recommendation of appropriate psychotherapy
  • Participation in coaching or counseling on emotion regulation
  • Referral to specialized services (e.g. psychiatrist, couples counseling, stress management services)
  • concrete suggestions for self-care and structuring everyday life
  • psychological support during change processes in private or professional life

Important: Emotional difficulties are not a sign of personal weakness—they are an expression of inner overload, unresolved conflicts, or stressful life circumstances. Early and professional clarification helps you better understand yourself and initiate targeted steps to relieve stress.
