Family and Couples Therapy – Understanding relationship conflicts, growing together
What is Family and Couples Therapy?
Family and couples therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach aimed at improving relationships within families or partnerships. It provides a safe environment for openly addressing tensions, communication problems, or emotional distress and developing solutions together. The goal is to promote mutual understanding, resolve recurring conflicts, and strengthen the quality of the relationship.
The focus is not on “guilt” or “cause,” but on the cooperation of all those involved – with the aim of opening up new perspectives and scope for action.
When is couple or family therapy useful?
This form of therapy can be helpful in many situations, such as:
- in the case of persistent conflicts in the partnership or family
- in case of communication difficulties or misunderstandings
- after stressful life events (e.g. illness, separation, loss, birth of a child)
- in cases of jealousy, breach of trust or affairs
- when children or adolescents show conspicuous behavior and the family dynamic is strained
- in the case of patchwork conflicts or role ambiguities
- when there is a desire for better understanding, emotional closeness or new ways of living together
Even if there are no acute problems, couples or family therapy can help maintain the relationship and promote constructive communication.
Goals of Family and Couples Therapy
- Improving communication and conflict resolution
- Promoting mutual understanding and empathy
- Clarification of roles, expectations and needs
- Strengthening emotional cohesion
- Processing stressful experiences or unresolved conflicts
- Development of new, shared perspectives and ways of interacting
Course of therapy
Therapy is individually tailored to your family or partnership situation. The process is typically divided into the following phases:
1. Initial consultation
In an initial consultation, we will clarify your concerns, previous attempts to solve the problem, and the goal of our collaborative work. It’s important that everyone involved feels heard and is willing to work together.
2. Systemic inventory
We examine the current dynamics and communication patterns in your relationship or family: Who takes on which role? What unspoken rules or expectations exist? What needs are (or are not) being met?
3. Therapeutic work
With the help of targeted questions, exercises, and discussions, family or partnership dynamics are reflected upon. Systemic, emotion-focused, and solution-oriented methods are used, among others. The goal is to develop new perspectives and break out of established patterns.
Examples of topics:
- Learning constructive communication
- Dealing with emotional injury or withdrawal
- Strengthening shared values or intimacy
- Developing a better understanding of the other person’s perspective
1. Resource activation and solution finding
Together, we develop concrete steps for implementing changes in everyday life. We identify existing strengths and resources and use them in a targeted manner.
2. Reflection and conclusion
At the end of therapy, we reflect on our shared journey: What has been achieved? What remains challenging? What can we do in the future? Follow-up support can be arranged as needed.
What happens after therapy?
Ideally, you’ll emerge from therapy with greater clarity, mutual understanding, and new options for action. Even if not all problems are “resolved,” the process can help you view conflicts differently—not as a struggle, but as an opportunity for change and growth.
Important: Couple and family problems don’t mean someone has “failed.” Relationships are complex—and it’s a sign of strength to work together when things get difficult.
If you are considering whether family or couples therapy might be beneficial for you, I would be happy to meet with you for an initial consultation – open, respectful and solution-oriented.
