IQ Test

Intelligence Diagnostics (IQ Test)

Introduction and Objectives

An IQ test (intelligence assessment) is used to comprehensively assess a person’s cognitive profile. It not only determines a single number for intelligence, but also builds a differentiated picture of cognitive strengths and weaknesses. This allows for a well-founded assessment of mental performance and can serve as the basis for further diagnostic and therapeutic decisions.

What does an IQ test measure?

Modern IQ tests consist of various subtests that cover different cognitive areas. The key measures include:

– Language comprehension and verbal skills:

Assessment of vocabulary, language comprehension and the ability to understand complex linguistic contexts.

– Logical-mathematical skills:

Assessment of analytical thinking and the ability to solve logical problems and mathematical relationships.

– Visual-spatial perception:

Assessment of the ability to recognize spatial relationships, identify patterns, and process visual information.

– Working memory:

Measurement of the capacity to store and process information in the short term, which is particularly essential for problem solving and planning.

– Processing speed:

Recording how quickly and efficiently information can be absorbed and processed.

These test areas make it possible not only to calculate a total (the so-called IQ score), but also to identify specific strengths and weaknesses.

When and for whom is an IQ test useful?

An IQ test can play an important role in different situations and for different target groups:

– In case of learning difficulties or academic challenges:

To identify whether there are cognitive deficits or special talents that influence learning behavior.

– To clarify giftedness or need for support:

To determine whether there is above-average intellectual potential or whether targeted support measures are necessary.

– In professional contexts and consultations:

As a basis for professional reorientation or for planning individual support measures.

– In the context of expert opinions:

For the preparation of diagnostic reports, which are required, for example, when changing schools, making decisions about apprenticeships or in family law matters.

Testing procedure

Intelligence diagnostics in our practice are carried out using a structured procedure based on scientific standards:

Preparation and preliminary discussion:

An initial, non-binding conversation serves to clarify the reason for the testing, discuss individual questions and gain an overview of the development to date.

Test execution:

The actual testing typically lasts 1.5 to 2 hours. It uses recognized and scientifically validated testing procedures that measure different cognitive areas in several subtests.

Evaluation:

After the test, the results are evaluated in detail. This includes not only the raw test results, but also observations and information from the preliminary interview.

Discussion of findings and written report:

The results are explained in detail in a concluding assessment meeting. Upon request, a written report can be prepared that presents the test results, the identified strengths and weaknesses, and recommendations for further action in a transparent and understandable manner. The final report is usually provided within a few weeks of the test.

Benefits of intelligence diagnostics

Taking an IQ test offers several advantages:

– Individual support planning:

The detailed cognitive profile allows targeted measures for promotion and support to be developed.

– Transparency and orientation:

The test results provide both those affected and professionals (e.g. teachers, therapists) with a clear basis for better understanding developmental processes and developing individual strategies.

– Well-founded decision-making support:

Whether in a school, professional or private context – an objective and well-founded test report supports decision-making in many areas.

– Trustful cooperation:

A transparent testing process promotes understanding and strengthens cooperation between those affected, their families and the diagnostic professionals.
